Pros and Cons

The diesel generator engine is an economical working device. The cost of fuel is rising every day, diesel is the cheapest fuel found compared to other production fuels. It is affordable by all the manufacturing companies, large or small scale industries. Every thing in this world has two sides, good and bad. A diesel generator engine can be very useful but if not maintained properly can yield unavoidable losses.

Advantages

  • The rate of the fuel is cheaper than other fuels. If calculated a diesel engine will save around 30% of your fuel cost. Consumption of diesel is minimal so refueling is not required.
  • The durability of a diesel engine is more than a petrol engine, the combustion rate is lower than a petrol engine. If they are kept in good condition, they can last for years.
  • Diesel is found on all the fuel stations meaning high availability. Some of the providers even deliver the diesel to the work place. It is not rare like kerosene, which is only found on specific pumps.
  • The maintenance of a diesel engine is cheaper than a petrol engine. The servicing costs are also less. The parts of the diesel engine are also cheap. The engine is free of trouble if maintained properly.
  • The diesel generators are good power suppliers, you can get them in all the ranges of power requirements. Starting from a 15KW generator to a 2000KW generator.
  • Operational costs are reduced as they are used for creation of electricity and the cost of diesel is much less.
  • Diesel generators can be kept running through out the day, it requires much less time to cool down. As they are water and air cooled it does not need to be shut down for cooling purposes.

Disadvantages

  • Installation charges are more than other generators. The start up cost of a diesel generator is more and can be 1/3 of the generator cost.
  • Diesel engines are much noisier than other gasoline engines. The noise levels can be unbearable at times. They are provided with good silencers but sound levels cannot be controlled.
  • The emissions of a diesel engine are more than a petrol engine. A diesel engine creates more smoke than a petrol engine. The composition used in exhaust of a diesel generator is the same one as used for other engines. The smoke emitted by the generator can be very harmful and can cause skin irritation.
  • They take a lot of time in starting up the engine in cold weather, some of them also require heaters to start up.
  • A diesel generator is very heavy and cannot be relocated. The place where it is installed is generally its permanent place.
  • If it is not properly maintained the repairing of the generator can cost a fortune, the cost of the parts are more than other engines.

These are the pros and cons of using a diesel generator engine. The durability of the engine totally depends on the maintenance part in the life of the engine.
