History

Diesel generator engines have a long history and mainly owe its roots to two creators, namely Michael Faraday and Rudolph Diesel. Michael Faraday is the inventor of the first generator and has contributed greatly in providing the best means of power supply in times of power cuts. Michael Faraday was a person of curious nature and had a liking to do lots of things which really interested him at an early age. He was mainly interested in force and energy and this particular interest continued all through his life until he ultimately went on to become a well known physicist and chemist. It was in the year 1831 when Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction which led to the growth of several modern day generators.

Faraday used the induction ring in order to discover electromagnetic induction. It was an induction or generation of electricity in the wires by using electromagnetic effects of these currents in another wire. It was in fact one of the first transformers which followed with the discovery of magneto-electric induction procedure. This is one particular process where a steady electric current is produced. Faraday attached two different pieces of wire by using a contact to the copper discs. He even rotated the copper disc through the magnet poles and succeeded in generating constant direct current. It was the first generator of that time. All these experiments led to developing a generator which every person knows in this modern day.

However, the diesel generator owes its growth to Rudolph Diesel. He  initially began working as a refrigerator engineer. Working on his project he founded several heat engine designs. In the year 1892, Rudolph placed a patent which dealt with the design and method of the diesel engine where-in combustion takes place in the cylinders. Rudolph continued working on this project and later achieved his goal by successfully producing the first diesel engine which had 75 percent efficiency. He had actually combined the generator and his diesel engine which led to the invention of the modern day diesel generator engine. Rudolph’s particular design was rather large in size and also quite heavy so it was more of use in industrial areas rather than homes and offices.

Newly developed diesel generator engines were used for powering electric plants, pipelines and even water plants. After a few years, applications in the oil fields and mines were found. Diesel generators are simply the combination of an electrical generator invented by Faraday along with the diesel engine invented by Rudolph. This combination has been used for all these years in producing diesel generator engines. Since then, diesel generator engines have been referred to as one of the best options for several well established companies as it suits commercial and even domestic use. The fact that it can be noisy at times has been considered as one of the main discouraging factors in terms of usage in the retail market. However, this problem has been eliminated to a large extent from the first diesel generator engines and at present can be compared to some of the large gasoline generator engines.
